It has been found that the bacteria associated with periodontal (gum) disease can expand from the mouth and cause these other issues in the body. This is why we at Cortes Advanced Dentistry are placing such an emphasis on maintaining oral health for life, so your smile and your body can remain at their peak. We have compiled five important dental tips to help you achieve optimal oral health – read on to discover these amazing dental instructions!

ONE – It’s fundamental: brush and floss!

It’s something that has been drummed into us from an early age; brush twice a day and floss once a day. It’s simple and it’s effective, when done correctly. To ensure a whole mouth clean, be sure to hold the toothbrush at a 45 degree angle, and brush gently for around two minutes. During sleep we produce less saliva which allows a better breeding ground for bacteria if food particles are left in the mouth. This is why it is highly recommended to floss before sleep, as opposed to flossing in the morning.

TWO – Eat well

By consuming fruits and vegetables, you are helping your mouth stay healthy by providing vitamins and minerals to help your body fight foreign bacteria. Consuming leafy greens for example spinach or kale are high in calcium, which is essential for bone mass.

THREE – Avoid sugary foods and drinks

Bacteria that thrive in the mouth and cause dental issues are mainly the Streptococcus bacteria, which absolutely love sugar! As a way to avoid having this bacteria breed and accumulate in your mouth, be sure to eat a diet low in sugars, and clean your teeth soon after consuming something high in sugar. Sugar sticks to the teeth and the streptococcus bacteria find this sugar and use it as a breeding ground, slowly eating away tooth enamel and resulting in tooth decay or even periodontal disease.

FOUR – Keep fit

Yes, keeping your body healthy does indeed affect your mouth. Research has found that regular exercise helps to increase bone mass, which means stronger and healthier teeth. So get your body moving so your dental health doesn’t suffer.

FIVE – Visit a dentist twice yearly
